Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey make up Mexico's contribution to the host map. Latin American travelers will usually find these the cheapest host cities to fly into. What to Know Before You Go

Visa & Entry
Travelers from Visa Waiver countries need an ESTA ($21 online, submitted at least 72 hours ahead). Citizens outside the Visa Waiver Program need a B1/B2 visa — expect processing to span weeks. File the application well in advance; demand spikes around the tournament.
Stays of up to 180 days are visa-free for most nationalities. You'll get a tourist permit (FMM) on arrival, or you can complete it online before flying. Going to matches in both Mexico and the US requires separate entry authorisation per country.
For visa-exempt nationals an eTA is mandatory ($7 CAD, online process). Where a full visa is required, submit the application early. Standard processing is fast; major events can lengthen the wait. eTAs are passport-linked and valid for a 5-year window.
Currency & Costs
The currency is the US Dollar (USD). Card payments are accepted nearly everywhere. Tipping is the norm: 18-20% in restaurants, $1-2 per drink in bars. Meal budgets: $15-25 at casual restaurants, $8-15 for fast food. Stadium food and drink pricing runs well above street prices.
MXN is the currency. US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, but you'll come out ahead paying in pesos. Customary tipping runs 10-15%. Meals at local restaurants run $5-10, putting Mexico at the top for budget-friendliness. ATMs are widely available.
CAD is the currency. Card payments — contactless included — are accepted everywhere. Tip 15-20% in restaurants. Meal pricing tracks the US, around $15-25 per plate. Note: displayed Canadian prices exclude tax, so total cost arrives 13-15% above the listed menu price.
Weather (June-July)
Conditions swing widely by city. Southern venues (Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C) are hot, humid affairs. The West Coast — LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C — runs milder and drier. In the east (New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C), conditions are warm and humid. Sunscreen, a hat, and steady hydration are key for outdoor stadiums.
The wet season begins in June. Altitude in Mexico City (2,200m) keeps days moderate at 25°C, with evenings turning markedly cooler. Plan for layers and a rain jacket. Temperatures in Guadalajara and Monterrey climb to 30-33°C with more humidity. Thunderstorms in the afternoon are routine but typically short-lived.
Some of the best weather Canada offers. Around 26°C is typical for Toronto, with occasional humid stretches. In Vancouver, expect 22°C, daylight stretching to 16 hours, and very little rain. Conditions are pleasant for outdoor events in both cities. Evening matches call for light layers.
Practical Info
Type A/B sockets, 120V. English is the main spoken language. Both Uber and Lyft work in all host cities. Hotels, cafes, and airports usually offer free WiFi. Pick up an eSIM or prepaid SIM at the airport for mobile data. Public transport runs the gamut — strong in New York, weak in Dallas and Houston.
Power: Type A/B plugs at 127V (US-compatible). Spanish is the primary language though plenty of English is spoken in tourist districts and near the venues. Both Uber and DiDi cover all three host cities. Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIMs at the airport keep data and calls cheap.
A/B plugs, 120V — same as US. Toronto: English. Vancouver: English/French. Ride-hailing via Uber runs in both cities. Reliable transit: Toronto's TTC and Vancouver's SkyTrain both connect to their respective stadiums. Mobile plans in Canada are costly — visitors should look at an eSIM or prepaid SIM.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book World Cup flights from Mexico?

Book 3 to 5 months before each match — January through April 2026 is the best window from MEX, GDL, or MTY. US-bound fares from Mexico spike in April 2026 as Americans start booking in the other direction. For Mexican host cities (CDMX, Guadalajara, Monterrey) last-minute can still work — domestic capacity is deep — but prices climb inside the final month.

Do Mexican citizens need a visa for the USA?

Yes. Mexican citizens need a B1/B2 tourist visa to enter the US. If you already have a valid US visa, no action needed — just bring your passport book. If you need to apply, expect a wait time of several months at many Mexican consulates — start the process at least 6 months before the tournament. ESTA is NOT available for Mexican passport holders; the B1/B2 visa is required.

Which Mexican airport is cheapest for reaching US host cities?

Monterrey (MTY) has the shortest and cheapest flights to Dallas (DFW) and Houston (IAH) — often under 2 hours and under US$200 round trip. Mexico City (MEX) has the widest network with direct service to most US host cities. Guadalajara (GDL) has strong direct service to LA and is a good match for West Coast matches. Cancún and Tijuana can also surface good deals on US domestic carriers.

Can I travel between Mexican host cities without flying?

Yes. ADO and Primera Plus buses connect most of Mexico with comfortable overnight service, and buses are cheap (US$20 to US$50 one-way). For Mexico City to Guadalajara (~6 hours by bus) or Mexico City to Monterrey (~10 hours), the bus is often better value than flying once you include airport time. Domestic flights (Viva, Volaris) are still fastest at 1 to 2 hours.

What if I find a cheaper fare after I book?

Volaris, Viva Aerobus, and Aeroméxico have different policies on fare drops. Volaris and Viva rarely refund the difference — book carefully. Aeroméxico sometimes offers fare-drop credit on flexible fares. For US carriers (Southwest, JetBlue) flying out of Mexico, their standard fare-drop credit policies apply. Set a price alert on this page to know the moment a cheaper fare appears.

Do I need travel insurance for US or Canadian matches?

Yes. Mexican social security (IMSS) and most private Mexican plans do not cover medical costs in the US or Canada. A short-term travel medical plan with at least USD 100,000 in coverage costs around US$30 to US$60 per trip and protects you from the much higher cost of US or Canadian hospital care. For Mexico-only travel, your regular plan usually works fine.
